Municipality of Breda Uses AI for Resident Needs

Breda aims to become a "green city" by 2030 and is developing a new vision for the Galderse Meren. This recreational area is intended to be appealing to all residents, regardless of their income. To gain a better understanding of residents' preferences, Breda municipality conducted an innovative study using AI.

Improving Public Space with AI

The study involved 3,750 residents, who described their ideal recreational spot through photos. AI analyzed this input to uncover unconscious, deeper needs, such as the desire for tranquility and connection with nature. These needs were then quantified by age and income group. This approach helps policymakers apply experience-driven management, taking both functional and emotional needs into account. The study thus contributes to the development of an inclusive and enjoyable public space in Breda.
